Album's That Matter.
As Hole's iconic second album ‘Live Through This’ approaches
its 21st year release date, I have decided to write a piece on this wonderful
album, and why I see it as one of the most iconic and important albums of the
90s era of American alternative rock.
Hole, formed in 1989 Los Angeles, comprising of
lead singer, Courtney Love, who would later be the wife of Nirvana's front man
Kurt Cobain, and lead guitarist Eric Erlandson. Known for its ‘revolving door’
of bassists and drummers, released their first album ‘Pretty on the Inside’ in
the summer of 1991. After the successful release of their debut, Hole began to
get some praise and gain a reputation within the underground clubs and grunge
scene of LA. A vast majority of people seem to label Hole's sophomore album as
too ‘mainstream’ and ‘generic’ and found great difficulty when deciding upon
the album’s genre. Could it be because the grunge scene grew in popularity
throughout America, bands like Hole were no longer different and known for
making a statement, but common amongst certain social movements during the 90s?
Most likely.
But despite the various claims about Courtney Love
& Co. I feel like this album and the sound created by the band in the late
90's is something that fits perfectly amongst this generation and will
withstand new musical movements throughout the recent decades. After
discovering Hole about two and a half years ago when a friend recommended their
third album ‘Celebrity Skin’ (1998), I decided to listen to their discography,
and that's when I first heard ‘Live Though This’ in whole (nice pun). And knew
this album would be one of my favorites, and I was right the more I listened to
this album the more the work of Hole and bands like; Sonic Youth, Babes In Toy
land and Bikini Kill started to grow on me, and in a way helped shape my music
taste and the bands I would get into later on in life.
So in conclusion this album means a great deal to
me, I feel like it expresses Love's feelings at the time and even now, 21 years
on, I still Love as this angry unique and crazy twenty nine year old woman who
was dealing with the loss of her husband and how his reputation would impact
upon her life, but yet still made this amazing music. Let me know your own
thoughts about Hole and any albums that you feel like changed your outlook on
music via twitter: @gothicpeachh.
