Rihanna’s Anti possibly the album of the year already?
Pop princess Rihanna is
normally known for her clean cut songs about diamonds and people making her
feel like the only girl in the world, but in recent years Rihanna has become
known as bad girl ri ri, the pop princess that’s trying to distance herself away
from that image of the clean cut wholesome pop star. And four years after her
last album Unapologetic Rihanna is back with her 8th studio album
Anti and to say it’s not an incredible album well that’s just a massive lie.
From the opening song
“Consideration “ you know that with this album Rihanna is making a statement
about who she is and the type of music that she wants to make, in past years
Rihanna has been known for taking a back seat when it comes to making her
albums but with this album it’s a completely different story. Two lines that
particularly stick out to me in the first track is “I’ve got to do things my
own way darling, will you ever let me will you ever respect me “and “let me
cover your shit in glitter I can make it gold “.
This song to me is Rihanna’s
way of saying fuck you I’m going to do this album the way I want to do it, let
me be the artist I want to be rather than having her label dictate to her about
the album they want her to make, which to me seems like a long time coming for her.
I would go through Anti track by track and tell you how brilliant each track is
but I don’t think that this review would ever get finished considering its
already taken me almost two hours to write three paragraphs. Obviously a couple
of tracks stick out to me more than others, including James Joint, Desperado,
her stupidly good cover of tame impala’s New Person, Same Old Mistakes,
produced by Kevin Parker himself and of course the last three tracks on the
album Love On The Brain, Higher and Close To You,(so basically all of them
really) which to me are the most personal and emotional songs that Rihanna has
ever written and released. Personally these three songs to me feel like just
Rihanna in a room with a piano, the emotions behind these songs are so raw and
they seem to just right seep through and you cant help but want to ask if
Rihanna if she’s alright and if she needs a hug and maybe a cup of tea.
Overall this album to me is just incredible it’s
not even been out for a whole day yet and I’ve already listened to it at least
ten times, this album to me is the album that shows us the real Rihanna,
whether or not you’ve been a fan of Rihanna from the very start or Anti is the
first album of hers you’ve listened to, this album shows us snippets of the
real Rihanna but still gives us the image of the pop princess with the amazing
voice.
