Albums Of The Year.
Well, here we are. It’s albums of the year time once again
this year has been both the longest and shortest year maybe ever in terms of
music, when I was putting this list together I couldn’t actually believe that
some of these albums came out this year because it seems that I’ve been
listening to these albums for what feels like an eternity but in the best way
possible of course.
Putting this list together and listening back to these
albums have been well a little bit emotional won't lie. All these albums mean
something to me in different ways and marked a part of my life this year that I
didn’t even realize, I mean sometimes some of these songs brought back memories
that made me want to do a little sicky, but you know it happens, again putting
this list together was a mixture of pretty simple choices and some of the
hardest, I could only pick ten because otherwise, this list would have gone on
forever and ever, of course, there are some honorable mentions that I couldn’t
leave out. So here it is libs albums of the year, now I’ve got to try and pick
my albums of the decade, catch me in about three months time still trying to
pick them.
Assume Form James Blake 18th January 2019
Now the fact this album came out this year has blown
my TINY MIND because I have convinced myself and everyone else that this album
came out in 2018, but alas for once libs was actually wrong. And in fact, you
did spend the first two months of the year listening to this album on repeat,
doing a big cry. This album seems to come out at the perfect time for me, still
reeling in stuff that happened the year before, and the fact that the seasonal
depression was at top spice level, this album managed to break me and put me
back together again all in the space of a lovely 48 minutes. James Blake has
always had a bit of a place in my heart purely for the fact that he is a big
sad soft boy, and we all know libs enjoys a sad soft boy. Not to mention the
fact that the features on his album are OUTSTANDING, of course, it made my albums
of the year. Favourite songs: are you in love? Barefoot in the park, and a lullaby for my insomniac.
When I get home Solange 1st of March 2019
Two words can only describe this album and the words are a fucking masterpiece. I was just a little bit skeptical about the follow-up album to the other masterpiece that is a seat at the table, but Jesus h Christ,
Solange went and did it again. We all know it’s going to be a good album when one
its Solange and two because the featured artists include Pharrell, Sampha,
Tyler the Creator and Dev Hynes, like we all know it's going to be a spicy boy
of an album. After spending the first two months listening to assume form on a
heavy rotation, this album again couldn’t have come at a better time for me, I
still think about when I saw Solange at Lovebox two years ago and truly there
are no words someone once said that Solange is everything that Beyonce wants to
be and I mean where is the lie? Favourite songs: Way to the Show Stay Flo, Dreams, Almeda, and Sound of Rain.
Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part One and Two: Foals
March and October 2019
Ah, Foals. My boys, where do I even begin with these two
albums? FIRST OF ALL NOT ONE, BUT TWO FOALS ALBUMS IN A YEAR? THANK YOU, LORD.
It’s a very well known fact amongst everyone I know, that foals mean you know a
lot to me, so after four years of no music you can only imagine the state I was
in when it got announced that they would release two new albums this year, I
believe the breakdown lasted a good four to six weeks. Whilst writing this I’ve
listened to both albums, and it's clear that both albums are incredible because
I mean its Foals, but one stands out to me more than the other. I spent the
first half of this year with Part one on repeat it reminds me of the spring and
the summer reminds me of the fact I got to see my favorite band for the 13th
time with my favorite people, it reminds me of how mad the first seven months
of the year were for me. Part two just I mean its part two isn’t it? I won't lie
I was a bit confused as to how they could top part one, but of course, they did
part two is something I truly can't describe it makes me feel everything and
nothing, they always seem to capture everything I feel without even realizing,
and they always probably will Foals forever and always. Favourite songs Part one:
In degrees, Syrups, Café D’Athens and Sunday. Part two favourites: Like
Lightning, Dreaming Of, Into the Surf and Neptune.
There are a lot of words that I could use to describe my
love for this album and Anderson. Paak, but for once I have no words to describe
this album, which truly is a first for me. I jumped on the bandwagon when I
first heard Dang! With Mac Miller and then was lucky enough to see him that
summer, and I’ve been obsessed ever since it’s hard to explain the emotional
journey I go on every time I listen to this album because it’s a whole thing.
I think I spent the whole month of April with this and the next album on the
list on repeat, so much so that my mum is now constantly listening to him. I
think no matter what sort of album he is going to make it’s going to be an
incredible album, like don’t even get me started on the features on this album
MY GOD plus he’s just a bit good ain’t he really? Favourite songs: Make It Better, Jet Black, Reachin 2 much and
Come Home.
Not Waving But Drowning Loyle Carner April 2019
I mean it wouldn’t be right if this album didn’t make it to
the list, considering half of my Spotify wrapped this year was just this album,
downsides of sharing an account with someone who has only listened to this
album. But saying that this album, Jesus Christ what can I even say. Loyle has
been in my list of top boys since I first heard the Isle of Arran over two
years ago, if the first album didn’t make me want to cry, dance and repeat, for
a good six months then, boy I don’t know what I was expecting from this one.
Again all these albums this year seemed to have that come at just the right
time for me, it was spring the seasonal depression was slowly lifting I was
just a bit happy again and this album was a big old factor to that, it really
broke my heart but I guess in the best kind of way? Favourite songs: Desoleil (Brilliant Corners), Sail Away Freestyle, Ice Water and Still.
Igor Tyler the Creator May 2019
Again it would make no sense what so ever if this album
didn’t make the list, because well it’s me so it’s only fair that this is has
made it in. Tyler has been a part
of my life for as long as I can remember, which sadly I can remember it was
2013 and everyone had just discovered Chanel Orange and Odd Future, Wolf had
also just come out and to say that I was obsessed is a bit of an
understatement. My love for Tyler has never really faded over the years, seeing
the way his music has grown and changed has been one of the nicest things to
see, he has always been talented there is no doubting that but Flower Boy and
Igor just be hitting different and I spent pretty much the rest of the year
listening to it, without even realizing it. Favourite songs: I THINK PUPPET, I DON’T LOVE YOU ANYMORE and
ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?
Nothing Great About Britain
Slowthai May 2019
I couldn’t think of a better-adapted name for an album than
this if I’m honest, this album is something else in every aspect, at first it
was a slow burner for me I didn’t really see the hype surrounding it until I
sat down and listened to it and its probably the best decision I’ve made in a
long ass time. It’s hard to express all the feelings I had listening to it the
first time around but it was a lot. This album is the best example of
catapulting the state of the country and what it is to grow up working class in
a country that is run by a big old bunch of twats. Slowthai has seemed to be
everywhere this year, and it’s been great he’s had features on Brockhamptons’
GINGER, Tyler ’s album Igor, songs
with Skepta, he’s been everywhere and it’s been GREAT, in conclusion, Slowthai
is the boy. Favourite songs:
Gorgeous, Toaster, Nothing Great About Britain and T N Biscuits.
GINGER Brockhampton August 2019
I find it really hard to believe that this is Brockhampton’s the fifth album in two years, usually, you would think a group putting that amount
of albums out in such a sort of time, the quality of them would start to
diminish but not with this lot. Every time I listen to a new album of theirs I
think it can't get much better than this, and then it does, Ginger really did me
differently, I don’t even know if I can
think about or write about dearly departed just know that I’m not okay anytime
I listen to it. It also seems like the dynamic of the group switched a little we
seemed to hear more from Dom, Matt, and Merlyn rather than the other dynamic
that has been on the last couple of albums and has much as I loved that this
was just something else, if I have to sum up this album in one sentence all I
have to say is Dom’s verse in Dearly Departed, that’s it. Favourite songs: SUGAR, NO HALO, GINGER,
VICTOR ROBERTS AND BOY BYE.
Well, what can I say about Lana in a brief paragraph? If I’m
being honest not a lot because they are just too many words to describe how
incredibly talented she is and this album truly reflects that because what a
FUCKING MASTERPIECE. I go through huge stages of being her biggest fan and have
been since I first heard Video Games all those years ago or I don’t listen to
her for a while and then realize what a mistake that I’ve made by not listening
to her. You know I’m going to be a fan of this album when the opening line is
‘god dam man child’, this album is massively heartbreaking without even
realizing the majority of the time, of course, it has that obvious sadness you can
hear it so much in ‘fuck it I love you’ but even the songs that you think
aren’t apparently sad, are in a way that when you listen to it and then you
hear a line and it hits you proper hard, when you don’t even know it, it's that
kind of sad album, which I would argue is the best kind of sad album? Favourite songs: Mariners
Apartment Complex, Doin Time, Love Song, Cinnamon Girl, and California .
Over it: Summer Walker October 2019
This album wasn’t going to make the list, but after
listening to it for a solid week on repeat then it would be a bit wrong if I
didn’t add it to the list, Summer Walker is something else really, she captures
that early 2000’s R&B sound that makes my heart do a little cry, it reminds
me of the stuff I listened to growing up, it's like a snapshot of the past, her
voice, first of all, is OOOOF words can not describe when you listen to the opening the track ‘over it’ you know what kind of album this is going to be, its an album
about love and frustration, frustration about being in love and men just
generally being a bit shit. This album reminds me a lot of Sza’s Ctrl which is
one of my favourite albums of all time, and not mentioning the features and
samples from Usher, the KING of 2000’s R&B, it really is an insane debut
album, and an album that makes me feel like I am that bitch, is always going to
make the list. Favourite songs:
Body, Drunk Dialling... LODT, Come Thru, and Stretch You Out.
Honorable
mentions go to Sam Fender’s debut album Hypersonic Missiles, Fontaines D.c
Dogrel, Kevin Abstract’s ARIZONA BABY and Fka Twig’s Magdalene.
